Mahua Moitra to skip Enforcement Directorate summons in forex case today

Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra will skip a summons issued by the Enforcement Directorate to appear today in a Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violation case linked to the cash-for-query scam.

Moitra, who is fighting the Lok Sabha election from Krishnanagar, has communicated her decision to the central probe agency and requested them not to call her until the polls are over.

The 49-year-old former MP was called for questioning twice earlier by the central agency. However, she had skipped those summonses as well, citing official work.

On Wednesday, the probe agency issued a fresh summons to Moitra and Dubai-based businessman Darshan Hiranandani to appear before them today.

Moitra is accused of asking questions in Parliament in exchange for cash and gifts from Hiranandani to mount an attack on industrialist Gautam Adani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, among others. She was expelled from the Lok Sabha in December following a probe into the matter based on a complaint filed by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey.

According to sources, transactions linked to a non-resident external (NRE) account are under the probe agency’s scanner, along with a few other foreign remittances and fund transfers.

However, Moitra has denied any wrongdoing and claims that she is being targeted because she raised questions about deals of the Adani Group.

The Trinamool leader is also being probed by the CBI in the cash-for-query case. In a recent chargesheet, the CBI named Moitra and Hiranandani and charged them with criminal conspiracy, offences related to public servants being bribed, offences relating to bribing of a public servant and abetment.

On Saturday, following the direction of the anti-corruption ombudsman Lokpal, the CBI raided her premises in West Bengal. Following the raids, she wrote to the Election Commission alleging that the CBI is “harassing” her and “throttling her election campaign efforts”.
